I’m on sabbatical from work for the month. I wrote this on June 12. If more about Tait has come out since then, well, I haven’t heard about it yet.
I can’t see into the future.
Unfortunately, another high school idol of mine showed himself to be abusive.
This time, it’s Michael Tait from DC Talk.1
On the one hand, I’m devastated to learn about it.
On the other hand, I’d already become disillusioned with him after he evangelicaled all over Trump in 2019.
I posted a thing about it online, and my brilliant friend responded almost immediately with a considerably more important reflection than “I can’t believe he’d do this.”
Dude admits to committing unwanted touching over the past twenty years.
His apology has a whole lot of “I’m getting help from counselors and doing work to change.”
And, like, that’s fine and all.
I hope he does get help.
Despite all of my hang-ups over the years with Christianity, I still do believe that people can change for the better.
The Christian-y hope hasn’t gone anywhere.
The thing is, there are victims of his who will live with his actions for the rest of their lives.
My buddy’s question about him contributing to people’s therapy is a good one.
I have to imagine Tait has some expendable income from being a CCM icon for 38 years now.
Repentance needs to include change.
Making things right needs more than a verbal “sorry.”
His victims deserve it.
I’m glad the truth is in the public eye. It only came after being coerced, but it’s good that it’s out there now.
Christians are so quick to forgive Christians.
I’d be shocked if we don’t see “he made a mistake, but all of us are sinful” posts within the next few days.
Meanwhile, victims continue to quietly suffer.
The way we protect our Christian leaders is so gross.
And the Newsboys, where he sang about how terrible it is that we’ve removed prayer and talking about God from schools. *eye roll*
